On Monday, October 3, 2011 Alice Barnes Smith left her earthly home and took flight to her home of eternal rest. Alice was born on October 15, 1914 in Evansdale, North Carolina to the late Redmond and Jeanette Barnes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Essie Smith; a daughter, Barbara Smith; her son, Eddie Smith; a stepson, Bill Smith;seven sisters, Dora, Mary Estelle, Minnie, Edith Belle, Lula Mae, Nora Lee and Betty; her brothers, John, Fred and Redmond; her son-in-law, Herman Flowers;and one grandduaghter, Alicia Flowers Braswell.
Alice was a lifelong member of St. John A.M.E. Zion Church where she served faithfully as a Merry Toiler and as a member of The Pastor's Aide Club.
Left to remember her with love and thankfulness are her daughter, Aggie Flowers of Wilson, NC; four grandchildren, Donzaleigh Douglas (Horatio) of Sulfork, VA; Seretha Brown (Darryl) of Newport News, VA, Herman Flowers (Luchrisa) of Leonardtown, MD and Therman Flowers (Kendra) of Wake Forest, NC;seven great grandchildren, Jasmine and Cameron of Wake Forest, NC, Bria and Brandon of Leonardtown, MD, Horatio Douglas, Jr. of Suffolk, VA, Shawn Mason and Dexter Brown of Newport News, VA; her caregivers, Jimmie Barnes,her daughter-in-law, Glover Smith of Carrollton, VA; Jasper Barnes, Lois Newsome, Inez Tyson and Wiley Ward of Wilson, NC; her cherished cousins, Betty Fleming and Madeline Jones; a special friend and caretaker, Rev. Janice Cox of Wilson, NC; her devoted friends, Fran Depavalo, Burt Rountree, Dorothy Braswell and Thelma Forbes of Wilson, NC; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be held Saturday at 12 noon at St. John AME Zion Church 119 N. Pender St, Wilson. The Rev. Dr. Michael S. Bell will officiate. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.
A viewing will be held Friday from 3 pm to 8:30 pm at Carrons Funeral Home with the family receiving friends there from 6 pm to 8 pm. They will receive friends at other times at the residence of her daughter, Aggie Flowers 2000 Fieldcrest Rd, Wilson and will assemble there one hour prior to service in preparation for the funeral procession.
