Elder Irene Barnes Melton age 80 of 5236 Lindsey Rd, Elm City passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012 at the Vidant Medical Center (formerly Pitt Memorial Hospital), Greenville, North Carolina.
Elder Melton was the daughter of the late Solomon and Henrietta Jones Barnes. A true woman of God, Elder Melton was an ordained minister for forty-seven years, and a pastor for thirty-three years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elder Ernest Melton.
Loving memories are forever cherished by her daughters, Deborah Ellis Hines of Bowie, MD, Valerie Melton Berry of Winston-Salem, NC and Rev. Cynthia Melton Cherry of Richmond, VA; her sons, Allen Leon Barnes of East Orange, NJ, Lorenzo Barnes of Washington, DC, Leroy Ellis (Terri) of Sierra Vista, AZ and Elder Ernest Melton (Peggy) of Farmville, NC; a special son, Anthony J. Edwards of Wilson, NC; four sisters, Annie Cooper of Washington, DC, Christine Lowe and Odell Batts Harper (Steve) of Wilson, NC and Emma Lucille Glenn of Rocky Mt, NC; one brother, Rev. Ernest Barnes of Rocky Mt, NC; her sister-in-law, Beatrice Edwards (Alexander) of Wilson, NC; twenty-three grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A service celebrating her life and work will be held Saturday at 12 pm at L.N. Forbes Tabernacle 1800 Lane St Ext, Wilson. Elder Ernest Melton will officiate. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.
A viewing will be held Friday from 1 pm to 4:30 pm at Carrons Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 pm to 8 pm at Union Grove Primitive Baptist Church 519 Singletary St, Wilson. They will receive friends at other times at the residence of her son and daughter-in-law Elder & Mrs. Ernest Melton 3750 NC Hwy 903 North, Snow Hill, North Carolina. They will assemble at 5236 Lindsey Rd, Elm City one hour prior to service in preparation for the funeral procession.
