Essie Mae Pope Woodard was born June 9, 1918 in Wilson county, North Carolina to the late Frank and maggie Ellis Pope, Sr. On Sunday, March 3, 2013 God in His infinite wisdom called her home to eternal rest.
Essie Mae was also known affectionately as Sis. She united with Bethel AME Church in Stantonsburg, North Carolina at an early age. Essie Mae served faithfully as a deaconess, a member of the senior choir and a class leader. She was a dedicated member until her health began to fail.
In addition to her parents preceding her death were her son, Robert L. Pope; her daughter, Barbara Woodard Coppage; two sisters, Norma Hopkins and MaBert Pope; her brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Corrine Pope, Jr.; and one granddaughter, Towanda R. Woodard. Her loving, caring and gentle spirit will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Left to cherish her legacy of love are her devoted husband of sixty-seven years, Andrew Woodard of the home; her daughters, Mary Sherrod (Otis), Linda W. Barron (Moses) and Vivian W. Hall all of Wilson, NC, Teresa Woodard and Doretha Mitchell (Beverly) of Alexandria, VA and Annette Anderson of White Plains, NY; her sons, Andrew Woodard, Jr. (Carol), Tim Woodard (Gloria) and David Barnes (Annie) all of Queens, NY; one daughter-in-law, Juanita Pope of Maryland; one son-in-law, Joseph Coppage of Snow Hill, NC; thirty grandchildren, forty-seven great grandchildren, elven great great grandchildren, her caretaker and faithful granddaughter, Marquetta Coppage of snow Hill, NC; ten sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A celebration of her life and work will be held Friday at 12 pm at St. Luke Free Will Baptist Church 311 Church St, Stantonsburg, North Carolina. The Rev. Paul Sewell will officiate. Interment will follow in Hamilton Burial Garden.
A viewing will be held Thursday from 2 pm to 5 pm at Carrons Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at Bethel AME Church 210 Broad Ave, Stantonsburg, North Carolina from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. They will receive friends at other times at 60 Woodard Sutton Dr, Walstonburg, North Carolina and will assemble there one hour prior to service in preparation for the funeral procession.
