Mildred Diggs Hodge was born June 25, 1927 in Greene County, North Carolina to the late Rommie and Bessie Reid Diggs. Mildred affectionately known as "Top" to her family and friends passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 1, 2012.
Top was employed for many years with Wilson County Public Schools as a cook.
Believing in a Supreme Being, Top became a member of First Baptist Church in Lucama early in her life. She was a faithful member of the choir and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone.
Top was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She had a quiet, humble and loving spirit. Her memory will continue to linger in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Survivors are her daughters, Vera Caldwell (Henry) with whom she lived of Bailey, NC and Linda Ward (Rev. George) of Wilson, NC; her sons, Clarence Ray Hodge of Washington, DC and Charles Hodge (Sue) of Lucama, NC; two sisters, Etta Louise Simms (Steve) of Lucama, NC and Arbor Fox (James Henry) of Ayden, NC; eleven grandchildren, Anthony, Angie, Denise, Caprice, Kesha, Alicia, Ashley, Arika, George, Jr., Steven and Marquis; eleven great grandchildren, Kenya, Glen, Denesha, Jadarius, Reshon, Prince, Antigoni, Vashti, IsRene', Josiah and Jasmine; four great-great grandchildren, three step grandsons, Eric, Allen and Christopher; one god grandchild, Yvonne Wyith of New York; her sister-in-law, Irene Diggs of New York; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A celebration of her life will be held Friday at 1 pm at First Baptist Church 6161 Lucama Rd, Lucama. The Rev. Jeffrey Simms will officiate. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.
A viewing will be held Thursday from 3 pm to 4:15 pm at Carrons Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at First Baptist Church on Thursday from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. They will receive friends at other times at 4664 Strickland Rd, Bailey and will assemble there one hour prior to service in preparation for the funeral procession.
