Thelma "Jeff" Artis, daughter of the late Lonnie "Bill" Hilliard and Gertie Barnes Hilliard was born September 6, 1927 in Wilson County. She departed this earthly life on July 3, 2010 at Pitt Memorial Hospital Greenville, North Carolina.
Jeff was educated in Wilson County Public Schools. Later in life she met and married Lonnie "Bill" Hilliard, and to this union eleven children were born.
Memories of her love, warm personality and radiant smile are left to be treasured by her seven daughters, Doris Weaver (Otis), Mary Mendez (Jose), Deborah Francies, Florine Eatmon, Virginia Johnson (Stanley) all of Wilson, NC, Rose Artis of New York, NY and Lorisa Artis of Lithonia, GA; one son, Elmer Artis (JoAnn) of St. Albans, NY; one adopted son, John Best of Washington, DC; many special friends including, Dorothy Barnes, Bell Manning, Eveline Sharpe, Inez Banks, Joyce Ward, Joyce Liles, Bettie Fleming, Annie Hicks and Wilbert Sharpe; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be held Sunday at 2 pm at Barnes Chapel Missionary Baptist Church 1004 Railroad St, Wilson. Rev. Steven Kent will officiate. Interment will follow in Hamilton Burial Garden.
A viewing will be held Saturday from 3 pm to 7 pm at Carrons Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence, 1814-D Butterfield Ln, Wilson at all times and will assemble there one hour prior to service in preparation for the funeral procession.
